Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is endemic to the Cederberg Mountains in South Africa’s Western Cape, where the shrub’s needle-like leaves have been brewed as a drink for centuries by the indigenous peoples of the region. Rooibos is now a popular herbal tea worldwide, distinctly red in colour with a flavour described as smooth with a natural, subtle sweetness and slight nutty undertones.

It is cultivated only in the southwestern Cape, where it is adapted to the region’s climate and sandy, acidic soils. The name “Rooibos” (red bush) comes from the reddish tint of the leaves which are fermented in the open air during hot weather conditions usually in January and February.

Naturally caffeine-free and with low tannin levels, Rooibos boasts plentiful antioxidants. It has gained global popularity as a health-promoting substitute for both coffee and traditional tea.

This rooibos is cultivated organically in the Cederberg mountains and is earthy, warm and invigorating.
