This premium, Sri Lankan black tea is produced at Monkeytail Tea Estate – a 120-year-old tea estate overlooked by mountains in Gammaduwa Village in Sri Lanka’s Matale District.
Monkeytail is one of very few artisanal tea estates in the country and is part of an artisanal collective, which focusses on sustainability, transparency, small-scale farming and community well-being. They have 7 acres of vintage tea gardens – “in the long term, it is hoped to further develop the factory to provide more employment in the village, profit share, and help local farmers develop the skills and knowledge to make their own unique artisan teas.”
This premium orange pekoe is hand-rolled to ensure the leaf cells twist and break evenly. It is then oxidised simultaneously in 2Kg batches to allow for greater control over the finished tea. Monkeytail’s artisanal techniques create a copper coloured, aromatic tea with a light, delicate liquor and distinctive floral notes.
