Gyokuro, the highest grade of steamed Japanese green teas, is shaded before harvesting to maintain levels of amino acids in the leaves which give these teas their characteristic umami flavour. This gyokuro comes from tea gardens in the mountainous region of Kirishima – the gardens are family run and use only pesticide-free, natural tea processing methods. After the leaves were shaded for 28 days they were hand-picked and the resulting tea is an exceptional example of a gyokuro with a round, umami flavour, enduring sweetness and milky aftertaste.
The tea was named ‘Shinrinyoku’, which means forest bathing – the feeling you get when you walk through a beautiful forest – majesty, lightness and joy. That most rare of moments when body and mind are perfectly aligned and at peace. A fitting name for a remarkable tea.
